Paul S. Voakes, assistant professor of journalism at Indiana University, wrote this analysis of the findings of a scientific sample of 1,037 journalists at U.S. daily newspapers in the fall of 1996. Earlier, Professor Voakes worked with the Human Resources Committee of the American Society of Newspaper Editors to design the survey questionnaire. He is a former reporter, editor, editorial writer and columnist at three California newspapers. He has a doctorate in mass communication from the University of Wisconsin.

Since 1994 he has taught reporting, law and ethics at Indiana.
