 — Take on Rich Assignments

I’ve always placed great value in accuracy, fairness, and good writing. These matter no less since I became a managing editor. Now that my name is on the masthead, it matters more.

At the Boca Raton News, a 15,000 circulation daily in a South Florida tourist mecca, I spend a lot of time in the trenches — and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m a hands-on  manager, contributing in many ways to the creation of a product for our readers.

That is a joy of newspapering in small cities. I’m never so bogged down in creating and enforcing policy that I lose sight of the content. Having worked at major metropolitan dailies, I know this management approach might not be warmly embraced.

This newspaper has a talented, energetic staff. For many, it’s their first or second job out of college. With these reporters and page designers/copy editors, I have the opportunity to use my experience as a journalism educator. The veterans have served the paper for as many as 19 years, offering experience and perspective that is invaluable. It is a wonderful mix.

I would encourage anyone who is interested in advancing in newsroom management to consider small newspapers. You’ll have a chance to make your personal imprint.
