What are the things we can recommend as far as designing at a newspaper
the size of The Sun-News? Well, maybe you should know a little about
us first.
We range in age from 25 to 30, yet we have close to 20 years combined
experience in newspapers. We’ve worked in California, New Mexico, Texas,
Missouri, Arkansas, Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan and right here in Myrtle
Beach, S.C. We’re fluent in Spanish, Chinese and English.

Rand Miranda and Ling Low are The Sun-News design staff in

So that explains a little of who we are and our experience level.
What have we done? Well, in 1996, The Sun-News (circulation 40,403)
was named by the Society of Newspaper Design as one of 22 of the best-designed
newspapers in the world.
The Sun-News is growing in circulation (it’s now 44,000 daily and 54,000
Sunday) and has grown consistently the last three years. We also have a
World Wide Web site (www.myrtlebeachaccess.com) and are planning several
new editorial products for launch later.
Individually, we’ve done everything from working in the composing room,
to covering NFL football games, to fully paginating entire newspapers.
We’re having a say in the look, focus, and future of our newspaper as we
approach the new millennium and our 30s, whichever comes first.
We’ve learned enough and paid our dues so we can razzle dazzle someone
on a Macintosh (Quark? No problemo.) (Windows? Clear as glass.) From hyperlink
text transfer protocols to Harris and the other computer systems and software;
if it has a screen saver, we’ve mastered it. And we’ve mastered it here.
And we even get along. Of course it always helps that we’re a mile from
the sand and surf of the beach. Sunscreen anyone?
So we know what to do, how to do it well, and we’re allowed to do it.
We’re large enough to compete with the larger newspapers, but we’re small
enough to try new things and improve old ways. These things are very important
as you consider a career in journalism and newspaper design.
The main thing we’ve all learned by working at The Sun-News: If you
want to stand out and be at a place where you have room to work and grow,
this is it.
We like being at a newspaper known for design, regardless of the size.
We like standing out. What about you?
