Students bring passion to ASNE Reporter

ASNE Reporter
The 18 college students selected for the ASNE Reporter represent diverse regions, cultures, ethnicities and life experiences. The students also bring a passion for and commitment to journalism whether it's through writing, photography, copy editing, or page and Web design. The student staff of the 2000 ASNE Reporter is:

Student staff members are:
Thomas Ashburn A 20-year-old sophomore in mass communications and journalism at Norfolk (Va.) State University, Ashburn is a news editor of The Spartan Echo, the campus newspaper.
Saba Bireda A 20-year-old junior in English and political science at Stanford University, is a staff writer at The Stanford Daily. Bireda was an editorial intern at The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky., last summer and will be at The Philadelphia Inquirer this summer.
Maribeth Brown A 21-year-old senior in photography at Loyola University in Chicago, is a photographer at The Phoenix, the student newspaper. She also worked as a summer camp photographer, producing a 72-page yearbook, newsletters and a slide show.
Katherine Bryja A 20-year-old junior in journalism and art theory and practice at Northwestern University, is the first student designer in the ASNE Reporter's 11-year history. She has been a design intern at The Detroit News and a news/design intern at the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Bryja will be at The Seattle Times this summer.
Annalisa Burgos A 22-year-old recent graduate of UCLA, is a returning student staff member. She was a copy editor and columnist of the Daily Bruin, the campus newspaper. This summer, Burgos will be a Dow Jones Newspaper Fund copy editing intern at The Dallas Morning News.
Stefani Carter A 22-year-old senior in journalism and government at University of Texas at Austin, was a reporter at The Daily Texan and KVR-Texas Student Television. She has free-lanced for various newspapers, including The Dallas Morning News. Carter was the 1998 Larry Wade Journalism Fellow at The Heritage Foundation.
Hanah Cho A 22-year-old senior in English and political science at Rutgers University, will be interning at the Trenton, N.J., bureau of The Associated Press. She worked as an intern at The Detroit News, The Morning Call in Allentown, Pa., and The Record in Hackensack, N.J.
Jessica Cutler A 21-year-old senior international relations major at Syracuse University, is an editorial assistant at the Syracuse University Press. She has been the photo editor at The Daily Orange, and an intern at Nickelodeon, National Geographic and the Syracuse Newspapers.
José Alfredo Flores A 21-year-old junior in print journalism at the University of Missouri, is a staff writer at the Columbia Missourian. He has served as an intern in the Money department of USA Today. Flores will be at USA Today as a sports intern this summer.
Sarah Gerry A 21-year-old senior history major at Dartmouth College, is a correspondent for the Valley News in West Lebanon, Vt. She has served as an intern at the Star-News in Pasadena, Calif., the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and The Times in Shreveport, La. Gerry will be a reporting intern at The Tampa Tribune this summer.
Sarah Hale A 21-year-old senior journalism major at the University of Kansas, is the managing editor of The University Daily Kansan. She has worked in the sports department of The Wichita Eagle and interned at The Wall Street Journal's Chicago bureau. Hale will be a reporting intern at Newsday this summer.
Joe Humphrey A 22-year-old senior journalism major at University of South Florida, is the editor of the campus newspaper, The Oracle. He covered education as an intern at The Virginian-Pilot. Humphrey will spend his summer as a reporting intern at the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times.
Juleyka Lantigua A 24-year-old journalism graduate student at Boston University, is the guest op-ed writer of The Progressive Media Project. A Fulbright Scholar, she served as a translator with the Office of International Affairs at the University of Madrid. Lantigua will be at the Radcliffe Publishing Course at Harvard University this summer.
Anu Manchikanti A 21-year-old senior journalism major at New York University, is a city desk intern at the New York Daily News. She has interned at Scripps Howard News Service, Forbes.com, the Star-Tribune and the Cape Times in Cape Town, South Africa. Manchikanti will be the family and education team intern at The Oregonian this summer.
Benjamin Olivo A 21-year-old sophomore journalism major at San Antonio College, is an editorial assistant in business at the San Antonio Express-News. This summer, he will be a reporter at The Cambodia Daily, an English-language newspaper in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Aimee Phan A 22-year-old senior English major at UCLA, is a free-lancer for various newspapers, including The Orange County Register and The Dallas Morning News. She has been an intern at USA Today and the Dallas Bureau of The New York Times. Phan will intern at The Oregonian this summer.
Sadie-Jo Smokey A 22-year-old senior in English/creative writing at the University of Nevada, Reno. She has interned at The Record-Courier in Gardnerville, Nev., the Reno Gazette-Journal, The Modesto Bee and The Oakland Tribune. She will intern at The Seattle Times this summer.
Lucas Wall A 23-year-old senior journalism and political science major at the University of Missouri, has interned at The Daily Oklahoman, the Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Roanoke Times. He was a Washington, D.C., correspondent for The Topeka (Kan.) Capital-Journal. Wall will intern at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel this summer.
