Out of eight seminars and dozens of experiments in newsrooms around the nation have come a handbook, a number of video tapes, case studies, and a growing pool of newsroom experience that addresses the challenge of bringing the practice of journalism in synch with the public’s concerns about how news and interpretation are presented. The participating editors have largely reached consensus about ways that journalists can improve their news reports. These concepts are worth examining by editors and their newsroom staffs as approaches to covering community issues in ways that resonate with contemporary public concerns and values. The initiative has been led by ASNE’s Ethics and Values Committee, funded by the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation, and facilitated by The Harwood Group of Bethesda, Md.
