Washington Post Senior Editor Milton Coleman Elected to Lead ASNE
Milton Coleman, senior editor at The Washington Post, assumes the presidency of ASNE, as members elect new directors to the board. In his acceptance speech Coleman addresses the revitalization of the organization.
WASHINGTON — Milton Coleman, senior editor of The Washington Post, was elected president of the American Society of News Editors on Wednesday. Five others were elected to the organization's board.
"We leave here today, thinking about tomorrow," Coleman said in a speech to members and convention attendees. “ASNE will be an organization that interacts with its members far more frequently than in the past, with useful and practical information to help you lead. The new technology will not be just something we talk about, but something we do — regularly and at times, almost exclusively. There will be an ongoing online program to better move us as an organization at the faster pace of communication today."
Coleman succeeded Martin Kaiser, editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, who became an ex-officio member of the board when his term expired.
Other officers elected: Ken Paulson, president and chief operating officer of the Newseum and Freedom Forum, vice president; Susan Goldberg, editor of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, secretary; and David Boardman, executive editor of The Seattle Times, treasurer.
Five directors were elected to the ASNE board, which is comprised of the four officers, the past president,15 elected members and two appointed members who represent online editors.
