Newsroom Diversity Survey

ASNE Newsroom Employment Diversity Survey

Increasing diversity in U.S. newsrooms has been a primary ASNE mission since 1978. The Society has been an industry leader in helping news organizations better reflect their communities.

The ASNE Newsroom Employment Diversity Survey (previously known as the Newsroom Employment Census), sponsored by a significant grant from the Democracy Fund and generous contributions from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Google News Lab, is a tool ASNE uses to measure the success of its goal of having the percentage of minorities working in newsrooms nationwide equal to the percentage of minorities in the nation's population by 2025.

ASNE has a new partnership with the University of Virginia Department of Media Studies to conduct the 2018 diversity survey. Assistant Professor Meredith Clark and her research team are leading the project.
